Sturgis: Music Roundup

This week we're highlighting more concerts you’ll find at Sturgis from Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 12. You can read more about the festival here. We’re writing about the events at the venues shown on the rally website, but you’ll find lots of music all over town, some free and some with a cover.

At the Buffalo Chip on Wednesday, August 8, there will be Super Hooligan flat track racing. The psychobilly band Reverend Horton Heat will play on the Wolfman Jack Stage. The Dallas-based trio will introduce you to the wild world of Jim Heath’s imagination. Eric Church will headline the evening. Church won the Merle Haggard Spirit Award last year, and among many awards, his album Mr. Misunderstood, was Album of the Year in 2016.

Steel Panther will be playing that night at Full Throttle. Steel Panther is a “glam metal” band from LA known for its bawdy, funny lyrics. Their most recent album is Lower the Bar.

At the Iron Horse Saloon® Outlaw Nation’s Southern Revival tour will showcase Crossroad Station beginning at 2 p.m. Their albums so far are Our Neck of the Woods and Righteous and Rowdy. David Allan Coe will play again, followed by Faster Pussycat (a sleaze-rock band from Hollywood), Starset (rock band from Columbus, Ohio known for “Monster” and Halo”), and encores from Dirty Sexy Riot and Hairball, all on the Dennis Kirk Main Stage. At 11 p.m. Wheeler Walker, Jr. again appear on the Indoor Stage.

On Thursday, Kid Rock will appear at the Buffalo Chip. His style has moved from hip-hop to country for the last decade. He’s known for being able to play any instrument in his band, for various controversies, philanthropy and lower ticket prices, and for his eclectic style. Sweet Southern Sugar is his most recent album. Kid Rock will be preceded by Lita Ford, glam metal guitarist.

At Full Throttle, you’ll hear Jackyl, a hard rockin’ band out of Georgia. Jackyl might be best known for lead singer Jesse James Dupree’s chainsaw solo on “The Lumberjack.”

At Iron Horse, the Outlaw Nation tour kicks off the day at 2 p.m. with Black Water Mountain again, and another chance to see David Allan Coe. After that, you can hear Wayland (four-person rock band named after its home town in Michigan), Dorothy (an LA-based rock band named after lead singer Dorothy Martin), then Dirty Sexy Riot and Hairball. At 11 p.m. Tim Montana will perform on the Indoor Stage. Montana raises lots of money for veterans, especially those with PTSD. His most recent album is Tim Montana and the Shrednecks.

On Friday take a “Magic Carpet Ride” with John Kay and Steppenwolf. They’ll be on the Wolfman Jack Stage at Buffalo Chip taking you back to the glory days with their heavy metal thunder. To warm you up, Yelawolf blends hip-hop, rock, country, and blues.

At Iron Horse, Outlaw Nation’s The Plott Hounds plays at 2 p.m. They’re an alt-country and rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 6 p.m. you can hear Jelly Roll (beloved in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), CKY (Pennsylvania band famous for “Quite Bitter Things” and more), and Insane Clown Posse (horror-hip-hop duo that puts on a tremendous show) and, at 11 p.m. on the Indoor Stage, Tim Montana.

On Saturday, don’t miss Queensrÿche at Buffalo Chip. You’ve probably seen them, since they are from Bellevue. They’ve sold over 20 million albums worldwide and Operation: Mindcrime is said to be one of the best heavy metal concept items ever. The rocking just gets harder when Chevelle takes the stage. They’re a post-grunge, nu-metal band from Illinois. They’re single “Joyride (Omen)” from their latest album The North Corridor was their fifth song that made Number One on Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks.

Closing the week at Full throttle is Tech N9ne (say Tech Nine). He’s a rapper, a singer, a producer, an entrepreneur. Listen hard to catch his dynamic rhyme and fast delivery—called chopper style. (We know choppers, right?) Tech N9ne’s latest album, his 20th, is Planet.

At Iron Horse, hear Outlaw Nation’s Creed Fisher and the Redneck Nation Band—the name tells the game. They’ll be followed by Gina and the Eastern Block (an alt-rock/electronic band from LA), Texas Hippie Coalition (a heavy metal band from Texas), Little Miss Nasty (sexy lady rockers), and In This Moment (a heavy metal band from LA). Tim Montana will appear at 11 p.m. on the Indoor stage.
